Climate Integration Workshops

Exploration workshops for charities and funders

Climate change and wider environmental issues increasingly shape the social issues charities and funders care about, from poverty and health to housing, food and inequality.

For many social issue charities and funders, the challenge is not whether climate change matters, but how to respond in ways that strengthen core missions rather than distract from them.

These Climate Integration workshops support charities and funders to explore how climate change, and wider environmental issues, intersect with social issues in the UK, and how we can respond in ways that are practical, proportionate and aligned with existing priorities.

The sessions are designed for charities and funders who want to build understanding, confidence and shared language, without assuming prior expertise in climate or environmental policy.

What the workshops cover

  • Explore intersections
Understand how climate change, wider environmental issues, people's lives and inequality intersect in the UK

  • Build confidence and capability
Develop confidence to identify where social and environmental issues can be addressed together, and where integration adds value to existing strategies and programmes.

  • Learn from peers
Explore how funders and charities are beginning to integrate climate and environmental considerations into their work, including different starting points and approaches.

  • Work through realistic case studies
Talk through tailored, fictional but realistic case studies to explore practical implications for funding decisions, grant criteria, relationships with applicants, and internal processes.

Who the workshops are for

These workshops are designed for:

  • Charities, trusts and foundations working on social issues who want to understand how climate change and wider environmental issues affect their work and the people they support

  • Charity and funder staff, trustees and board members with varied levels of confidence and experience on climate and environmental issues

  • Organisations looking for a supportive, exploratory space to build understanding and confidence, rather than a prescriptive or technical framework

  • Organisations looking for practical support to drive forward action in time and resource stretched environments based on sector good practice and innovation

Sessions work well for mixed groups, including programme staff, leadership teams and trustees across charities and funding organisations.

What participants say

“An energising, engaging and practical session”

Edie Macgill Fassnidge, LLoyds Bank Foundation

“The session was thought-provoking and accessible for funder staff, from those who had given little thought to the intersection of social and climate issues to those quite well versed. Attendees went away with shifted perspectives and some practical starting points for a more systemic approach to funding.”
Philippa Knott Kos, Devon Community Foundation

“Liz has extensively explored the links between social issues and the environment and is well placed to show how climate change, biodiversity loss, and responses to them risk worsening existing inequalities. She also highlights opportunities for co-benefits. Combined with her insight into how funders operate, her workshop offers practical guidance on how funders can work with and support applicants and grantees to align environmental concerns with their programmes and missions.”
Nick Addington, William Grant Foundation
