I offer an accredited Carbon Literacy training course for charities and funders that explores both the carbon emissions and environmental impact on organisational missions.

Driven by our changing climate and environment, change is coming to the UK. Indeed has already arrived and will only increase. Change could be for the worse, if we fail to stop climate change and nature loss. Or changes could be positive if we harness the opportunity of the transition to a post-carbon economy to improve lives.  Not everyone is affected in the same way, and the people that charities and funders support are often the most greatly impacted - especially those on low incomes. All charities and funders need to understand the science, the consequences, and what we can do to create a fairer, healthier, and more sustainable future for everyone.

What does the course cover?

Why Carbon Literacy training?

It’s one tool in the box, it’s not the answer to everything but has many advantages. Carbon Literacy training is a highly respected and accredited training approach. It is delivered on a peer-to-peer basis, where each version of the course is tailor made for a particular sector and delivered by an expert from that sector. Benefits include:

  • Increased confidence of staff / trustees / volunteers on climate change and environmental issues

  • Consistent access to reliable information on climate change, wider environmental change and what it means for your organisation

  • Certification for participants from the highly respected Carbon Literacy Project

  • Practical learning, case studies, and conversation to help shape your next steps

There’s lots of Carbon Literacy training out there, how is this one different?

To my knowledge, this is the first Carbon Literacy training course to cover both charity and funder emissions and missions. This combination is critical for our sector. Whilst all carbon emissions matter, in the main our sector can play a greater role via our missions than reducing our emissions. This is with the exception of those with endowments or some ‘super major’ charities delivering carbon heavy services. However over 80% of our sector is composed of much smaller organisations punching well above their (carbon) weight. In addition, our sector stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the people across the UK who will be most impacted by the changes ahead – for better or for worse depending on policy and practice decisions. This course covers both the role of charities and funders in leveraging their mission related delivery and reducing their carbon footprints where appropriate.

Alternatives

Carbon Literacy training is a formal training course – albeit one with plenty of time to reflect and learn together. If you are looking for something else, please get in touch. For example, I provide (non-accredited) workshops to explore how different social groups across the UK are affected; and in the main I deliver Carbon Literacy training as a part of wider bespoke support package for a charities/funders to help them to understand how the people or issues they support are impacted by our changing environment. This training is also available through some ‘funder plus’ / ‘support alongside grants’ programmes, so please check with your funder.
